What do we know about sports injuries: The costs are both direct and indirect. They extend well beyond the injured athlete into other parts of society. One cost can extend into another cost. Costs in all areas have been increasing for years. Related to popular benefits of sport and physical activity. Is related to growth of sport, risk, media. There are cost and benefits to every activity. Soft tissue, cardiac, and adrenal issues in endurance sports. Public costs not well-documented relative to psychosocial benefits. Sports injuries are hidden within popularized benefits of sport, games, and physical exercise. We see more documented sports injuries but most are not studied or researched. Examples: in context of how / why / where / when they occurred. 25% of all er visits in the usa among 5 24-year-olds were sports related. Males had 2x as many injuries as females. 70% of all softball injuries are due to sliding into base.
