All outside stimuli gets turned into the action potential. Sensory systems allow you to distinguish between inside and outside. Gives you information on the position of your body. Not just one thing: there are relay points (spinal cord then usually in the medulla, in the thalamus, different points where the information can get influenced (integrated or suppressed) Information from retina gets sent to various places. Light information goes to place that is regulated by circadian rhythm. Looks at light levels to adjust pupil opening. Light levels go to pineal gland (production of melatonin) Information sent to superior colliculus: to orient head towards things that are interesting. Visual cortex: different representations of information coming in through the retina. Several structures of the eye have refracton (breaking of the light) Whatever you want to look at: shows up in clear focus, on the back of the eye.
