Document Summary
A prison is a corrections facility that holds people, known as inmates, for crimes that they have committed. Here people are also being held awaiting trial. Prisons are a form of sentencing and are considered to be a punishment. The inmates are confined and aren"t free to go. It"s a legal process in the criminal justice system. In the sense that it helps keep away dangerous people from society, yes they do make us safer. However, it can backfire if prisoners are up for bail and they are released into society with no rehabilitation. The same crimes may be committed with their release, if not worse. Prisons are designed to keep criminals and citizens separate, so in that aspect, they do make us safer by emphasizing that border. As long as the prisoner is held in the corrections facility, they are unable to commit any more crimes.
