PSY-33 Lecture Notes - Lecture 30: Homelessness
Document Summary
Hoped-for selves: might include the successful self, the creative self, the rich self, the thin self, or the loved and admired self. Feared selves: might be the alone self, the depressed self, the incompetent self, the alcoholic self, the unemployed self, or the bag lady self. Possible selves: help us choose our aspirations, maintain motivation, and provide continuity in our self-concepts over time. 33% of post-secondary students and 25% of adolescents mention physical appearance as part of their desired self. Four groups of youth differing in their rates of delinquency. Overall, possible selves of this sample were more likely to include criminal than having a job or getting along well in school. The self has changed in the course of history. During 16-18th centuries, people became fascinated with the distinction between inner and outer life. Before this, people equated the self to concrete outer appearance: people looked like their station in life and that is who they were.
