Document Summary

Of mice but not men: problems of the randomized clinical trial, samuel hellman and deborah s. hellman. The hellmans contend that randomized clinical trials place physician-scientists (physicians who simultaneously act as scientists) in a terrible ethical bind. As physicians, they have a duty to look out for the best interests of their patients; as scientists, they have an obligation to ensure the integrity of their research. But often they cannot do both, the hellmans say. But if she does so, the validity of the research will be compromised. Thus, randomized trials often pit the good of patients against the good of society. There are conflicting moral demands when it comes to randomized clinical trials reflecting the conflict between rights-based moral theories and utilitarian ones. The first idea, depending on the idea of kantian ethics states that human beings, by virtue of their unique capacity for rational thought, are bearers of dignity.
