Language disorder versus language difference versus language delay. Language disorder deficits in language comprehension and/or expression. They are heterogeneous and the nature and severity of disorders can vary. Examples of language disorder: language disorder due to autism, expressive language disorder, mixed receptive expressive language disorder. Language difference not disorder, not a problem, unless it is getting in the way of communication. Language difference is something that happens due to the influence of another language (accent) and/or difference in cultural, geographical, or ethnic factors (dialect). Having an accent or dialect is not a problem unless it interferes with one"s communication abilities. Language delay this refers to a delay in acquisition of language skills compared to one"s chronological and cognitive/intellectual peers. Often times individuals will have life long conditions that cannot be fixed with surgery or medication, such as autism or downs syndrome. Prevalence number of individuals with an existing diagnosis at any point in time.
