CDIS 3223 Speech and Language Development Fall 2016
TERM SHEETS AND HANDOUTS Page 1
Differences
• Intraindividual variation – each preschooler may differ in his or her language
skills.
• Interindividual differences – preschoolers of same age may demonstrate
differences in rates of acquisition and skills.
o Language profiles – collection of language samples which include
information about different language components such as phonology,
morphology, semantics, syntax and pragmatics. You have them say a
short story, look at pictures, etc.
▪ This is helpful in documenting a child’s strengths and weaknesses.
o Early literacy profiles – include literacy measures such as narrative skills,
metasemantics (ability to explain meaning of words and sentences), and
discourse.
o Effects of socioeconomic status – lower socioeconomic status can
influence the language development.
o Effects of gender – girls tend to do better in overall language skills
compared to boys of the same age.
Measures for Spontaneous Language Samples
• Language sample analysis – analysis of language skills during different tasks
such as picture descriptions, monologues, and conversations. (pg. 220)
