Subjects are not assigned to iv levels. Done when not ethical, possible, to assign pps to levels. Same from chapters 10 & 11, the dirty dozen . Matched groups -- each iv level is set up similarly, matched for race, gender, education level, etc. Pps start exposure to iv level(s) at diff times. Measure them before, during, and after an interruption. Ex) curtain of distraction implementation for arizona state basketball games. Same as above but w/ a comparison group. Ecological validity - subset of external validity, closer to real-world situations. Good external validity, more prioritized over internal validity. Study things that could not be ethically studied in a lab. Each pp is treated as a separate experiment. Results can generalize when internal validity is sound. Unlikely that there"s a coincidental history effect. Key: treatment not expected to have lasting effect. All 3 designs involve observing behaviors w/ and w/o treatment.
