300 million sperm cells swim to the fallopian tubes. Genetic material of the sperm and the egg unite, forming a single celled zygote. 16 celled morula leaves the fallopian tube. Cell differentiation occurs for the first time. Between 8 and 30% of pregnancies end in miscarriages at this stage. Most moms do not know that they are pregnant at this stage. Fertilization occurs within 24 hrs of ovulation. 16 celled morula travelling down fallopian tube to uterus. Blastocyst becomes fully embedded in the wall of the uterine. Occurs from the 3-8th week after conception. Gives nutrients to the baby and signals between the mother and the baby. Embryo is so curved that they almost touch. Differentiates into the gastrointestinal tract and lungs. Heart divides into two and the brain differentiates into the forebrain, midbrain, and the hindbrain. Most structures and organs present with sex organs. Encompassed part of the first and all of the middle and last trimesters.
