Document Summary

Responsible for knowing the organism and the disease process that it causes. Need to give to patient either im (intramuscular) or iv. In reality, not all bacteria are pathogenic to humans. Non-infectious stage of the organism, but it is metabolically active (replicates). Exotoxin inhibits protein synthesis and is responsible for pathogenesis. Composed of dead bac, dead lysed cells that accumulate and sit @ back of throat. Spread by airborne transmission from environmental reservoir to human host. Pontiac fever a little bit more self-contained form of lg disease. Inflammation of the brain or sc meninges (membranes). Can spread from person to person quite easily. Bacteria may be diagnosed by gram stain of csf. Culture of csf may or may not grow bacteria. Clinical manifestations similar to bacterial meningitis but show no microbial agent in gram-stained specimen and in culture. (g+/g- matters!!!)
