Most countries like to believe they get the proper amount of respect internationally and get angry when they don"t think they are receiving it. Strategies to gain status: colonies, economics, weapons and warfare. Colonies: before wwii many powers had large empires. Great britain had the largest empire so they had the most prestige which made them the best trading force in the world. Germany had a stronger economy and land based military but was behind great britain because they didn"t have any colonies. +germany tried to colonize but it was slim pickings after the scramble for africa, some say this was a major cause of wwi. After wwii, france wanted to find a way to regain their prestige so they tried to retake their former colonies like indochina. +ho chi min and the vietminh successfully resisted and defeated the french because they were possibly the best guerilla fighters ever. *largest defeat for the french was at dien bien phu.
