Document Summary

The history of queer history gerard koskovich. The history of queer history: one hundred years of the search for shared history, pg. Every individual has a past, meaning every social group must have a shared heritage. However, lgbtq people usually are born into families with little to no connection with. This means they do not benefit from hearing stories which reflect their lgbtq desires or identifications, through either formal or informal means. This also means they cannot rely on their birth families to teach them about their history or culture, as they usually do not identify. History as a discipline tends to err on the side of heteronormativity, erasing evidence of nonnormative gender identities or same-sex inclinations. When lgbtq presence was acknowledged, it was typically referred to as something immoral, criminal, or deviant behaviour best forgotten. This leads to lgbtq people not being able to see their history or culture in formal settings such as museums, monuments or history books.
