Invisible populations- lgbtq people and federal health policy in canada: mule and smith. There is a systematic lack of consideration of sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and lgbtq health in federal health policy discourse. Lgbtq health is most often referenced in relation to aids and hiv. Health issues affecting trans people include sexual reassignment surgery and hormone therapy. The canadian rainbow health coalition has undertaken a range of initiatives in lgbtq health and has been quite inactive for the past few years due to lack of funding but it does contain material on health and wellness. The government has attempted to take up the discourse of gender based analysis/gender mainstreaming which is an approach that integrates genders into all aspects of policy making. In 2009, the government took it further that recognized sexual orientation and gender identity in health policy by adopting sex and gender based analysis.
