Paradigm - a scholar"s intellectual world view . You can religious paradigm, or politics paradigm (ideologies) Important because: it influences the kinds of theories we construct influences the methods we use to test these theories. Two broad paradigms for research: science and humanities. Let"s look at the extreme differences first (science vs. humanities) Ontological differences (how does human nature/behavior work) Social scientists - behavior in terms of cause and effect. Humanities - individual choices, free will, how people act individually. Explain social behavior in terms of causes and effects. Goal is to identify probabilistic laws of behavior. Social scientists are interested in the factors. Humanistic theorizing - emphasizes on the free will side these determined that you would end up here identify/describe individual choices/rules. Don"t care about factors, more into how people interpret their reality. But for critical theories - power constrains choice. Goal is to develop understanding of each unique experience.
