Document Summary

Language development influenced by its communicative function: which is social. Evidence for: language is used for communication use of pragmatic cues/social context to learn, language is a symbol used to communicate. Infants accept gestures and non-words as labels for things. It"s just too complex to have evolved only from interactions. Language is like everything else: evolves out of basic learning mechanisms available to the infant (statistical/perceptual/conditioning, not one module but several parts of the brain (connections) working together to build a brain network. Using symbols as information: dual representation, you must understand that it is a map and it can lead to places and show me things, realize the purpose of the map and what it represents, scale models. When children were led to believe that the room had been shrunk, younger preschoolers could perform the task: the scaled model of the room and hiding the object to find.
