Document Summary
Reflexes: newborns demonstrate reflexes- innate, fixed patterns of action that occur in response to particular stimulation. Blinking, sucking, crying, grabbing, rooting towards something, falling/flailing. Dynamic systems examine the stepping reflex which include stepping movements when he or she is held under the arms with feet touching the surface even if under 1 month old. For the first few months infants are limited to prereaching-clumsy swiping movements by young infants toward the general vicinity. Infants begin to successfully reach for objects around 3-4 months of age. 7 months infants gain the ability to sit independently and reaches become stable. Reaching shows signs of anticipation and at 10 months infants approach to an object is affected by what they do and intend with the object: self-locomotion. At around 8 months of age, infants become capable of self-locomotion for the first time by crawling. Infants begin to walk independently at around 11-12 months, using a toddling gait.
