BIOL 123 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Extracellular Polymeric Substance, Mucilage, Nuclear Membrane
Document Summary
Prokaryotic cells display a surprising degree of complexity. Bacteria have much simpler cellular organization than eukaryotes do. Cyanobacteria and other photosynthetic bacteria are able to produce organic compounds from light energy due to the large number of thylakoids flattened tubular membranes that grow inwatd from the plasma membrane they have large amoudns of chlorophyll. Photosynthetic bacteria of aquatic systems also commonly contain many gas vesicles to increase cell boutancy. Other bacteria, membrane ingrowth as led to other adapations. Magnetosomes tiny crystals of an ion mineral known as magnetite each surrouned by a membrane. Act as a compass needle and thereby lcoat the submerged low oxygen habitats they prefer. Plasma membrane invaginatiosn produce nucleus like bodies composed of double membrane enclosing all ceullular dna and some ribosomes lacks the nuclear pores like eukaryotes its pretty close to the nuclear envelope and isolates dna.
