Document Summary

A comparison can be made between 3d modeling a sculpting in stone. When modeling in 3d programs, you are given a choice of primitive shapes with which you use to begin making more complex shapes. Before you begin modeling, you will need to choose which geometric shape to begin with. The 2 most common types: nurbs, polygon-based surfaces. These are 4-sided shapes, whose points are linked together with curves. They are generally used for more organic models. Working with nurbs involves changing the curves using control vertices that modify the shape of the curves. These are shapes with 3 or more points. Generally used to nonorganic models, such as walls or refrigerators. Working with polygons involve manipulating the points that are interconnected to form the shape. An individual point is called a vertex: these vertices can be pushed and pulled to adjust the shape. A line joining 2 vertices is called an edge.
