A theory is a representation of why behavior occurs. Theories must be able to be tested. Theory- test and account for why a certain behavior occurs. Phenomena- doesn"t account for the why but demonstrates a behavior occurs. Cheating can be tested for reasons why. Social reasons- women less likely to cheat because social repercussions. Desire to pass on genes- men spread their opportunity and women bear children so they don"t feel this desire. Good research is theory driven and a phenomena is a starting point for a theory to form. Inductive- specific to general (e. g. attachment) attachment) See something specific and broaden it out to become a more general idea (i. e. kitty geno. - raped and murdered in queens in the 1960"s. No fewer than 39 people had witnessed the crime, but no one called 911. People knew there were other people who could have called 911 and that"s until after the guy had left why they didn"t call themselves.
