PSYCH-220 Lecture Notes - Lecture 32: Karen People, Tabula Rasa, Road Rage
Document Summary
Id = unconscious psychic energy, all underwater. Pleasure principle (seek pleasure and avoid pain) Primary process thinking (no logic, no conscious thought, totally non- moral, seeks gratification by trying to act or fantasize to receive pleasure) Superego = internalized ideals (partially above and below water) Internal representation of external social morals & rules. If we act against this, we will feel guilty and bad about ourselves, and vice versa. Ego = executive mediator (partially above and below water) Tries to get gratification, but within the constraints of society. Starts to develop in early childhood; grows over time; strong ego is a good thing. Can tell the difference between fantasy and reality, and has the ability to tolerate tension (unlike the ego) Sometimes, id + superego + reality balancing may lead to anxiety and other symptoms--neuroticism is depression/anxiety (this alerts the ego that it needs to act/negotiate)
