Secondary process thinking: conscious thought; rational and practical; can delay gratification. Conscience: what we shouldn"t do - guilt. Ego-ideal: what we should do - inferiority. Last to develop, still in early childhood. Grows out of ego identification with parents. Ego"s tricks to keep certain thoughts and impulses hidden in order to avoid or lessen anxiety. Denial prevent perception of source of anxiety. Repression prevent recall of anything that might remind one of source of. Reaction formation protect against forbidden thought or impulse by instigating. Projection attribute unwanted impulse or attribute in oneself to other people.
