Right to self-determination: every state has the right to be its own state. Primordial: the primacy of an ethnic factor. Nations are new phenomenon of 20th cent. But find its origins in ethnic ties like culture, traditions, myths, historical elements, heros, bloodline. Role of elites is to mobilize people along lines of ethnic identity which existed before the nation itself. Treats nation as a historically fixed thing. Ethnic entrepreneur: elites who create a nation.
