Document Summary

Cell theory: a cell is the smallest unit of life. Anything smaller than a cell cannot sustain itself: all living organisms are made up of one or more cells, new cells arise from pre-existing cells. Unicellular vs. multicellular single cellular things are completely exposed to the changing environment. Unicellular have a lot of extra protection surrounding them because of their risk to exposure to the physical environment. Our cells are, for the most part, are very much protected from the physical change around us. Characteristics shared by all cells: all cells are surrounded by a membrane. There is something surrounding the cell that is protecting it: all cells have internal mass (cytoplasm) Inside of the membrane there is stuff fluid, molecules, etc: all cells contain genetic material (dna) Genetic material holds genetic instructions to function properly and reproduce themselves: all cells have ribosomes (protein synthesis) Cyto is the latin root for cell and plasm is for a fluid.
