Depression-low, sad state in which life seems dark and its challenges overwhelming. Mania- the opposite of depression, is a state of breathless euphoria, or at least frenzied energy, in which people may have an exaggerated belief that the world is theirs for the taking. Unipolar depression-mood disorder where only suffer from depression. Bipolar disorder-alternate periods of mania and depression. Symptoms-which often exacerbate one another, span 5 areas of functioning. Emotional-most people feel sad and dejected; anhedia-inability to experience any pleasure at all. Motivational-depressed people typically lose the desire to pursue their usual activities. Physical-ailments such as headaches, constipation, dizzy spells, and general pain. Major depressive episode-period marked by at least five symptoms of depression and lasting for two weeks or more. Major depressive disorder-people who experience a major depressive episode w/o having an history of mania. Dysthymic disorder-people who display a longer-lasting (at least 2 years) but less disabling pattern of unipolar depression.
