Affects attention, interpretations, storage, and recall of information. Procedural list of what to do in a certain situation. Ex: how to act on a date. Generalizations/ beliefs about the self that organize and guide the processing. If you go into a situation with a certain set of expectations, you will focus on info that is consistent with the schema and ignore info that contradicts it. Interpreting new information in terms of existing beliefs. We see what we expect to see. Tendency to search for information that confirms our preconceptions and ignores information that contradicts what we already think. Capital punishment study (ross & lepper 1979) Already agree w/ death penalty agree with the information supporting it, counter argue the information against it.
