PSYCH 3400 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Preterm Birth, Birth Weight, Prenatal Development
Document Summary
The sickness can actually last all day and all night long. 2/3rds of women will experience this during the first trimester: headaches, frequent urination, fatigue. Quickening: occurs as the pregnancy continues to develop, moment that the pregnant woman starts to feel or perceive fetal movements. Third trimester: leg cramps, numbness and tingling, heartburn, insomnia, braxton hicks contractions. Different from the standard contractions you feel when you are having baby. However, to parents, they seem to be the same thing. Newborn infants recognize rhymes and stores present before birth. Newborns also prefer smells, tastes, and sound patterns that are familiar because of prenatal exposure. Prefers the mother"s voice over the father"s voice. Prefers their native language over a foreign language. Prefers their own mother"s milk over another mother"s milk. Prefers their own amniotic fluid over another infant"s amniotic fluid. Variations in birth weight: low birth weight (lbw)
