Document Summary

Mendel was able to begin with genetically pure stock due to the fact that the pea plants that he used usually self-fertilize. The characteristics that mendel chose to use were very distinct (ex: green or yellow, but no in between. ) Pangenesis = gemules from all over the body travel to the reproductive organs to be passed on to the offspring. Terms such as gene and allele did not exist when mendel was doing his work. The term locus is often used interchangeably with gene. The phenotype of an individual is not always determined solely by the genotype sometimes the environment plays a factor in gene expression. Mendel cut the anthers off of some plants to prevent self-fertilization and control his experiments. If a monohybrid cross is between a green female and a yellow male, then the reciprocal cross is between a yellow female and a green male: this was done to eliminate the possibility of sex dependency.
