BIOL-3160 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Salivary Gland, Connexon, Desmosome
Document Summary
Tissues are formed from three primary germ layers. Cells bound closely together by different junctions. Minimal amount of extracellular matrix is in between cells. Apical surface (exposed to the environment or some internal space) All have basal surface where epithelium is attached to underlying ct. At base of epithelial surface it is bound to a thin basement membrane. This membrane is produced by epithelium and ct. Richly inverted to detect changes in the environment. Most nervous tissue is in the underlying ct. Frequently damaged because they are exposed to the surface so their regeneration rate is high to deal with lost or damaged cells. All substances that enter/exit body must pass through epithelium. Innervated by nerve endings to detect changes in external surfaces. Nerve endings and nerves in ct supply info to body. The two laminae contain collagen fibers as well as specific proteins/carbs. All of these strengthen the membrane and form selectively permeable membrane.
