GEOL 333 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: George Gaylord Simpson, Fitness Landscape, Handicap Principle
Document Summary
Descent of man and selection in relation to sex. Two sexes of the same species exhibit different characteristics beyond the differences in their sexual organs. A female is very limited in how many males she can reproduce with. Females do the choosing and males must do the selling. Expensive secual displays indicate high quality genes, because lower quality genes could not support the display. Traits that do not necessarily indicate good genes, butt do indicate parental quality. The favoring of a trait with no fitness indication. Some traits are so strongly preferred that the females will mate only with males possessing the strongest expression of that trait. In subsequent generations, male offspring are more likely to possess a preference for that trait, whereas female offspring are also more likely to possess a preference for that trait in males. Over time, the species may develop extreme sexual dimorphism.
