Document Summary

The cell is the smallest unit of life. Demonstrates all the basic characteristics of living things/ There are 2 types of cells on earth. Small simple structure with no membrane organized organelles. Carry out life"s processes all in the same area. Not much dna: single circular piece, and sometimes contains additional smaller circles. Larger, more complex structure with much internal organization. Much more dna: organize into chromosomes, stored in the nucleus: cell structure. Individual cells need to exist within a specific range (largest to smallest) Too big: difficult to move materials around efficiently within the cell. Too small: the cell loses too much heat. Parts of a eukaryotic cell: plasma membrane, cytoplasm, cytosol, organelles, nucleus, ribosomes, endoplasmic reticulum, golgi aparatus, lysosomes, mitochondria, cytoskeleton, cell wall, vacuole, chloroplast. Plasma membrane: the outer boundary of the cell. It"s functions are: maintain cell shape/structure, connect cells. Regulate passage of substances in and out of the cell.
