Cases (judicial decisions or common law : common laws are rules that might not be written down anywhere, but are upheld by the courts. Highest law in the land, sets the structure of the entire government. Constitutions exist at the national and state level. Adopted by legislature: us congress adopts national statutes, in ca, the state assembly and senate adopt these. Codes and ordinances exist at the local level. Expertise in a particular field is desired, which is why administrative agencies make these laws. Gives stability and predictability in the law, especially in regards to business. Courts of law: courts that awards compensation of some sort (money, land, personal property). Courts of equity: courts that can award remedies (can get someone to stop doing something, can take action as opposed to merely giving compensation. Public laws: govern the people, made by the government. Private laws: dictate personal relationships (contract disputes, torts, employment claims) Criminal law: addresses wrongs to the public.
