Emancipation of the surfs (look it up booboo) 1800 s: russia cannot keep up with the system that their in, the system was inefficient. 1853: russia gets into war, russia cannot fight modern countries because they were so far behind. politicall backwards, militarily backwards. 1861: major changes, great reforms, emancipation of the surfs, design the countryside to prosper so that russia can prosper, turn modern. When people were surfs the system is like this. Mir was collectively responsible for collecting taxes and recruiting soldiers, mir had to go to every family can pay the taxes. People were given land, and later on, it would be redistributed. Flaws of the emancipation: they kept the mir and put the peasants in deeper debt because they had land that they cannot afford. Every family has to have a samovar, it is to heat up tea, if you do not have that then you have hit rock bottom.
