Socrates" goal in the reading (mp 60) is to argue that acting justly or morally is in own self interest. Glaucon plays the devil"s advocate arguing that morality or justice is against our best interest. There are things that are intrinsically good. *good character- when glaucon places the just man against the unjust and the just man does not have a reputation for being just while the unjust man has the just reputation. There are things that are not good in themselves but brings about good things (extrinsically good) These are purely a means to an end. Could think about it as an extrinsic good brings about more good than harm because some of these can bring about both. If we could do away with these goods, we would. If we could have everything money buys without working for the money/ having the money. Glaucon"s main goal is to show that justice belongs to the category of only extrinsic goods.
