Document Summary

These terms are often used interchangeably, even though they refer to different parts of the research design. We often fall into the trap of using these as synonyms so it is often difficult to differentiate between these terms. One might think of a questionnaire as a specific type of measurement instrument and a measurement instrument as one tool that can be used for data collection within a research study. Think of a measurement instrument as a tool used to collect data for survey research projects specifically. There are a lot of books on survey methodology and one of them makes the point that most of these books fail to provide a definition of survey research. Instead, like most books on this topic, jump right into the characteristic and errors and characteristics with survey methodology and assume the reader will infer what a survey really is.
