PR 660 Lecture 3: Historical Development of SCCT
Document Summary
The most obvious change is the shift from symbolic to situational. The s in scct stood for symbolic when the approach was first made. Symbolic was a term chosen because the strategies to crisis response were seen as symbolic resources that could be used during crisis. Words are symbols so crisis response strategies are symbolic resources. Symbolic was replaced with situational because the theory is made on the specific situation of a crisis. Negative histories of performance drove the modifiers effect and created a velcro effect. This negative history of performance intensified how an organization was attributed for responsibility of a crisis and reputational damage to the organization. Another change was the shift from technical breakdowns to human breakdowns to technical error and human error when naming types of crisis. Breakdown was replaced with error because it showed the essence of the types of crisis much better than breakdown did.
