PR 660 Lecture Notes - Lecture 26: Impression Management, Natural Disaster, Workplace Violence
Document Summary
Crisis literature is in an early stage of development. Most research has been in the form of case studies. Corporate apologia, corporate impression management and image restoration theory contribute to the literature on crisis public relations. This research was the first to systematically identify crisis response strategies. Dionisopolous and vibbert (1988) were the first to posit that the apologia genre could be applied to organizations, in addition to individuals. They argued that organizations have a public persona and are generally perceived as individuals by their various stakeholders. Apologia gives a tool to identify, categorize and analyze different crisis responses. Different stakeholders need different types of responses to fit their need in a crisis. Crisis responses in this category can be used to rebuild the identification of an organization or restore the relationship in an organization. Denial and bolstering are reformative because they revise the feelings of stakeholders.
