Once you"ve planned and created a strategy, you can define the ground rules with the other side and negotiation procedures. During this phase, parties exchange their proposals and/or demands. When you"ve exchanged your positions, you and the other side will: This step doesn"t have to be confrontational if you don"t want it to be. It"s more so an opportunity to educate the other side on: You should give the other side any documentation they will need that supports your position on the issue. The essence of the negotiation process is the give and take that occurs when trying to come to agreement. This is where each party has to make concessions. The last step in negotiation is formalizing the agreement and creating necessary procedures to implement and monitor the agreement. For major negotiations this means you have to put the specifics into a formal contract. For other situations, to close the negotiation, it normally just takes a handshake.
