I. Freudian (Psychoanalytic) Personality Theory
A. Impulses for pleasure and aggression ultimately motivate all human behavior

B. Structure personality comprises three regions
1. ID: behavioral energy derived directly from impulses (pleasure principle)
2. EGO: conscious understanding and management of reality (reality principle)

stages
1. Oral: initial pleasures come from sucking, biting; infant’s “personality” thus organized

3. Phallic: physical attraction to opposite sex, competitiveness toward same sex

4. Latency: sex, aggression are less in evidence
