JOUR 625 Lecture Notes - Lecture 41: Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Alprazolam, Job Satisfaction
Document Summary
As much as journalists might think of themselves as superhumans who observe history, the truth is that they are just as likely to face trauma as are the victims of the stories we report on. The problem with trauma coverage and this mental health epidemic deals with: education. Journalism students aren"t being educated by trauma they may face in reporting. Not many undergraduate programs in journalism address this aspect of reporting. Only 7% of universities who have journalism departments have some sort of course offering related to crisis reporting. Only about 25% make any mention about trauma reporting in their curriculum. This is really absent from journalism education in undergrad. Even though there isn"t a lot of education on trauma, there is a lot of interest in teaching it. A lot of educators think it"s important to teach but they don"t know how to teach it.
