Theodicy= a religious explanation of why there is suffering death, and evil in the world, for both the individual and the collective. *can serve as an opiate to the deprived. Every religion has to provide a theodicy or set of theodicies in order to keep its believers. How religions can explain the existence of evil. I as an individual am nothing, god is everything . Person is only what he or she thinks god wants her/him to be. The attempt to move beyond the ego, see the ego as an illusion. Masochistic attitude= individual reduces himself to an inert thing, an intoxicating surrender to god. The individual is unable to live in aloneness/meaninglessness, so in order to deal with this problem, one denies separateness.
