RLG100Y1 Chapter Notes - Chapter Theodicies- The Explanation of Good and Evil: Theodicy
Document Summary
In monotheistic religions, the reason for the existence of good and evil is an important and widely-speculated topic. Although jews, muslims, and christians all believe in an all-powerful god who is the epitome of all good in the world, evil still seems to exist. This confusing fact caused religious scholars to create a plethora of theodicies in order to understand why this occurred and how to tell people how they must combat evil in their everyday lives. Although it is impossible to pick just one theory to explain the good and evil, the most likely explanation for the existence of evil in the world would subjectively lie in a combination of three popular theodicies. The first of these is the free will theodicy , which states that at the conception of mankind, god gave us the gift of free will which allowed us to commit both immoral and moral acts if we chose to.
