Psychoanalytic theory: sigmund freud: founder of talk therapy. Wolpe: principles of conditioning to formulate the first behavioural therapies. Principles of psychic determinism: idea that all behaviour including overt/covert are caused/determined by a preceding mental event; everything we do is caused by mental/psychological event that comes before hand. Overt behaviour: one that you can directly observable. Covert behaviours: thoughts, wishes, fantasies, impulses; things you can"t directly observe) Bernheim actually demonstrated to freud, that by simply urging her simply without using hypnosis allowed her to recall events and symptoms went away. Psychoanalytic technique was created after these methods: report to analyst everything that comes to mind technique of free association (access unconscious, can"t see directly, so analyst listens and makes inferences (inferential methology)). Patient"s symptoms create real discomfort and subjectively want to get rid of them; on the other hand, their resistance tend to underline process (defense mechanisms) Fixation: development has been arrested, they are stuck/can"t move on from it libido.
