Freud"s system of psychoanalysis is the one from which all later forms of psychotherapy evolved. All talk therapy is in some way beholden to freud. Carl rogers (come back to the end of the course) - client-centred therapy. Rogers objected to freud"s techniques, created a response to psychotherapy. Freud: couch to recline on, analyst seated by your head so you can"t see them. Rogers: this physicality creates a power imbalanced (analyst/patient) - asymmetrical relationship. Rogers: psychoanalysis can actually hurt people for this reason. Big criticism: only accomplishment is meeting the elitist needs for the analyst community (wank) Main complaint was the length of treatment - years and years, often multiple times a week. Is freud right or wrong? (often pondered by students)
