Trait approach relates to statistics in a personality. Passive victim of the environment with the behaviourism. Principles of conditioning account well for 2 broad categories of behavior: Emotional reactions and attitudes and preferences that stem from these reactions. Action tendencies- as a result of experience to positive and negative situation, how they emerge and how they disappear. Movement in 1970"s where behaviourists, dollard and miller tried to reduce psychoanalysis into learning principles. Repression is learned inhibition that elicits anxiety (very reductionist) Tried to purge metaphysical psychoanalysis into drives and habits. Fail to capture essence of human experience. Ignore phenomena which are obvious outside lab. No one teaches children to do things, they learned by modeling. People make decisions with imitating behaviour through weighing the pros and cons of the outcome. Primary maternal: where you become obsessed with cleanliness and baby proofing the home. Emphasis on learning rather than inherent traits. Emphasis on importance of social surroundings rather than internal dispositions.
