The appearance of body hair, the emergence of a girl"s breasts, and the enlargement of a boy"s penis and testicles are all signs that childhood is gone and adolescence is here. Many adolescents take great satisfaction in these signs of maturity. Others worry through their teenage years as they wait for the physical signs of adolescence to appear. Puberty- a time of physical transition to adulthood that involves both bodily growth and sexual maturation: puberty denotes two general types of physical changes that mark the transition from childhood to young adulthood. The first are bodily changes, including a dramatic increase in height and weight as well as changes in the body"s fat and muscle contents. The second type of physical changes concern sexual maturation, including changes in the reproductive organs and the appearance of secondary sexual characteristics, such as facial hair, body hair, and breasts on girls.
