Document Summary

The control and experimental groups must be equal to one another every way except for iv. Individual difference variables: never ask who wants to be in which group. Random assignment: by using this you are assuming that all individual difference variables are being evenly distributed among groups so that the groups are essentially equal to one another: trying to prevent any confounding variables. Correlational method: measures the degree of relationship between 2 variables. There is no attempt to control and manipulate variables. Rather, naturally occurring variations on both variables are measured to see if they are related. Means both variables are changing in the opposite direction: as v1 goes up and v2 goes down. Third variable problem: kind of like a confounding problem: low self-esteem = depression, depression= low self esteem, distressing events or biological predisposition = low self-esteem or depression.
