Document Summary

Cynicism: inclination to believe people are motivated by self-interest. Politics: the activity by which rival claims are settled by public authorities. Private realm: where the state"s authority doesn"t extend. Marxism, postmodernism (foucault), & feminism, associate politics with a pervasive pattern of oppression. These groups define politics as how inequality is generated & reinforced through. Power relations that exist between classes/gender groups at all levels of society. Political conflict is largely about where the boundary between public/private should be drawn, what should be considered a proper matter for public life and decisions by the state, and what should remain private matters. Influence: to convince other parties my actions are in its best interest. Authority: organization/person issuing a command has the right to do so and should be obeyed. Irony in democracy that it requires dissenting pov"s & opposition to those in power be respected.
