Often called the great war or war to end all wars because at that time, people never believed a war of this scale could ever happen again. Understanding the role of science and technology in wwi in large part is based on understanding the mixed attitudes people had towards technology and the problems associated with battle strategy. The incompatibility of old-fashioned strategies and newer technologies is one reason why there were so many unnecessary deaths in wwi. This was also connected to old fashioned attitudes about warfare as well. Many newer weapons in wwi seemed to go against this very mindset.
