Child development takes place through processes of progressively more complex interaction between an active child and the persons, objects, and symbols in its immediate environment. To be effective, the interaction must occur on a fairly regular basis over extended periods of time. Ecological systems theory: microsystem, face to face interactions, bi-directional and reciprocal. People used to think autism was caused by refrigerator parents. Poor environment= fewer resources, to overcome poor environment you need very good parenting= buffer. Links between environments that contain child (some are formal others not) Settings that do not contain child but have a direct impact. Movement away from direct referral to psychologist. Multi-tiered assessment with modifications in the regular classroom by the regular education teacher as first step. What: screening, checklists, observations of behaviour and academic performance. Who: classroom teacher, special education resource teacher (sert) What: informal tests, diagnostic tests, provincial testing results. What: standardized tests of aptitude (vocabulary) or achievement (reading)
