Initial ideas of the role of sport: nobert elias. Why is it important to look at sports from a sociological perspective: understand how different groups experience and participate in sport, especially marginalized groups in society (conflict/critical theory) Identify certain patterns of influences that act upon different groups that impact their participation in sport: reveal to us the deeper workings of society. Why were sports neglected: a trivial pleasure-oriented activity that engages only the body and provides no objective value (ex. vain, superficial, hedonism, not a serious business like economics, religion, politics, etc. The problem of thinking sociologically: reification, logical fallacy of ambiguity, treating something that is not concrete as concrete, ex. Canada (should be canadians) have a long history of participating in sport. Can write responses to quarterback session if uncomfortable with public speaking. What is culture?: what are the major theories, who are they historically connected to? (marx, spencer, etc. )
